Barbra Streisand didn’t hold back. When she saw reports of Donald Trump bulldozing the White House East Wing to build a $300 million ballroom, the all-time Trump critic let it rip. She called the project “ridiculous.

The entertainment legend, 83, posted her thoughts on Threads, calling the demolition “symbolic of what he has done to our democracy.” She made it clear: this wasn’t just about bricks and concrete. It was about values. Streisand pointed out how the construction was happening during a government shutdown, while Americans were losing healthcare and struggling to get basic services.

In her words, it was “a perfect symbol of excess while people suffer.”

“Scary Times” and Speaking Out

Streisand has been a sharp Trump critic for years. She has called his time in office “scary” and said the country was “in deep trouble.” The ballroom just gave her another reason to speak out. She saw it not only as a misuse of money but as a warning: This is what happens when ego takes over leadership.

Barbra / IG / Barbra backed movements that push back against this kind of power play. She supported Jane Fonda’s effort to revive the Committee for the First Amendment, a group of artists defending free speech and democratic rights.

Streisand believes that artists have always had a duty to stand up for freedom, and now more than ever, their voices matter. She also urged her followers to join the “No Kings” protests, a movement calling out authoritarian behavior and demanding real accountability.

A Vanity Project or National Embarrassment?

The project itself was messy from the start. Trump first claimed the ballroom would be a small, tasteful addition. He said it wouldn’t interfere with the existing White House. Then came the bulldozers. The entire East Wing came down. The price tag jumped from $200 million to $300 million. Trump, unfazed, said the sound of demolition was “music to [his] ears.”

That comment alone set off a firestorm. It didn’t help that more than half of Americans, 53%, according to YouGov, disapproved of the whole thing. It wasn’t just about the cash. It was the timing, the tone, the arrogance. For many, it summed up the Trump era: bold, brash, and blind to the real struggles of everyday people.

Trump / IG / Senator Elizabeth Warren also weighed in, posting a photo of the wreckage and calling it “Trump’s presidency in a single image: Illegal, destructive, and not helping you.”

That picture, shared across social media, became a visual metaphor for what many saw as four years of chaos dressed up as progress.

The ballroom turned into more than a structure. It became a symbol. A golden room built on top of rubble. A monument to one man’s need for attention, even if it meant tearing down history.

This is a Message About Priorities

This wasn’t just a celebrity soundbite. Streisand’s comments tapped into something deeper. The project showed what happens when power goes unchecked. When image matters more than impact. When the needs of the public are ignored for the sake of a personal legacy.

She made it clear that this isn’t about political sides. It is about leadership. About choices. About what we, as a country, are willing to accept. Streisand used her platform to say that building ballrooms during a shutdown isn’t just bad optics. It is bad ethics.
