Menopause hits hard. Sleepless nights, mood swings, brain fog, low libido, and whatnot. Most people talk about diet, exercise, and hormone therapy. However, there is a powerful tool that many overlook: self-pleasure. And now, science is giving it the credit it deserves.
Recent research shows that regular masturbation can actually reduce menopause symptoms in a real, measurable way. It is self-care that works with your body, not against it. And it is shockingly underused.
Researchers at the Kinsey Institute collaborated with Womanizer, a sexual wellness brand, to explore the science. They looked at how self-pleasure affects menopause symptoms, and the results were loud and clear.

But those who did found it more effective than other common lifestyle changes. More than diet and more than exercise.
To delve further, they conducted a controlled study. Women were asked to stop masturbating for two weeks, then start again three to four times a week. Symptoms like poor sleep, low mood, and brain fog were worst during the no-masturbation phase. But once self-pleasure was back on the schedule, those symptoms dropped fast.
Why It Actually Works?
It is not just in your head, though it starts there. Masturbation, especially when it includes orgasm, triggers a flood of neurochemicals like oxytocin and endorphins. These chemicals lift your mood, lower stress, and help you sleep better.
That chemical cocktail matters. Mood swings, anxiety, and irritability are common during menopause. Regular orgasms can take the edge off, helping your brain feel more balanced and calm.
Physically, it also makes a big difference. Menopause often leads to vaginal dryness and thinning tissue, which can make sex painful. However, regular self-pleasure increases blood flow, which helps keep vaginal tissue more elastic and healthy. It is like physical therapy, but a lot more fun.
The Orgasm Factor
The study found that the benefits were strongest when masturbation included direct clitoral stimulation and led to orgasm. Women who used pleasure devices that made climax easier saw the biggest improvement in symptoms.
This is more about consistency, intensity, and doing what feels good. Orgasms kickstart your body’s natural healing chemistry, which is what gives this method its power.
And importantly, it puts control back in women’s hands. Just a few solo minutes a few times a week can change the way you feel.

Nearly half of the women in the Kinsey study said they would be open to trying it if a doctor recommended it. So why the silence? Stigma. Discomfort. Outdated ideas about sex and aging. But that silence is doing a disservice to millions of women.
It is time to shift that mindset. Masturbation is therapeutic, and women deserve to know all their options, especially ones that cost nothing and carry zero risk.
Remember, masturbation isn’t meant to replace hormone therapy or other treatments. It is not a silver bullet, but it is a valuable tool that more women should be aware of.
Women going through menopause face enough pressure. They need more options, not less. More ways to feel good in their own skin. And more support from the people and systems meant to help them.
