Jane Goodall changed the way the world sees animals, especially chimpanzees. But while most people know her as a fierce voice for conservation, fewer know about the two deep, meaningful relationships she had during her life. Dr. Goodall didn’t just study love among chimpanzees. She found it for herself twice. Both times, it mattered not just personally but professionally too.

The renowned primatologist and conservationist passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91. The official statement from the Jane Goodall Institute confirms she died peacefully in her sleep of natural causes while in Los Angeles, California, as part of her speaking tour in the U.S.

Jane Goodall and Baron Hugo van Lawick

Dr. Goodall first met Baron Hugo van Lawick in the early 1960s when National Geographic sent him to film her chimpanzee research in Gombe, Tanzania. He was a Dutch wildlife photographer with a calm presence and a deep respect for the wild. From the start, they clicked.

Pods / IG / Dr. Godall and Baron Hugo married in 1964 in London. Life wasn’t easy for the duo back then. They lived in tents, surrounded by forests and chimpanzees, while raising their son, Hugo Eric Louis, known as “Grub.”

Their relationship thrived in nature, fueled by a shared mission. His photos and films brought Jane Goodall’s discoveries to the world. Without his lens, her work might have stayed hidden in the jungle.

But their work eventually pulled them in different directions. Goodall needed to stay close to Gombe. Van Lawick had to roam to film other wildlife. They split in 1974, but the bond never broke. They stayed friends and collaborators until his death in 2002. His legacy lives on in the iconic images of Jane in the wild, notebook in hand, surrounded by chimps.

Jane Goodall and Derek Bryceson

One year after her divorce, Jane Goodall married again. This time, it was to Derek Bryceson, a former Royal Air Force pilot turned Tanzanian politician. He wasn’t a photographer or scientist, but he understood something just as crucial, which was power. As head of Tanzania’s national parks, he had the influence to protect Jane’s work at Gombe.

Pods / IG / Bryceson defended Godall’s research against political pressure and helped Gombe gain protected status. Goodall later said that without him, her life’s work might have been shut down.

However, their marriage was shorter, ending with Bryceson’s death from cancer in 1980, but it left a lasting mark.

He stood by her, not just emotionally but strategically. In a region and time where politics could make or break scientific progress, he made sure Jane Goodall’s research stayed safe. Thus, his backing gave her the room to keep pushing boundaries, even as the world around her changed.

Goodall’s Love Life was Atypical

Jane Goodall didn’t live by the usual rules. She didn’t stay in one place, didn’t follow a traditional career path, and didn’t treat marriage like a must-have. After Bryceson’s death, she never married again. Not out of sadness, but out of choice.

When asked, she said it clearly that she didn’t want to. She had her work, her son, and a global network of colleagues and friends. That was enough. Her life was full, her mission clear, and she had no need to fill a space just for the sake of it. Jane Goodall stayed true to herself.

In a world that often defines women by their relationships, Goodall flipped the script. Her relationships mattered deeply, but they didn’t define her. She found love twice and found purpose in doing so. And when one didn’t need the other to survive, she chose purpose.
