On a recent episode of the "It’s Giving" podcast, rap legend Snoop Dogg shared a moment that turned a fun movie day with his grandson into a loaded conversation. After watching Disney-Pixar’s 2022 film "Lightyear," Snoop said he felt ambushed by the movie's LGBTQ+ scene and had no idea how to explain it to a six-year-old.

"I’m scared to go to the movies now," the father of 4 said. His frustration wasn’t just about the scene itself but the sudden pressure to answer questions he wasn’t ready for. When his grandson asked how two women could have a child together, Snoop admitted he had no answer. That, for him, was the problem.

The Rapper Is Just "Being Real"

What followed was a storm. LGBTQ+ advocates hit back fast, accusing Snoop Dogg of being dismissive and homophobic. For them, representation matters, especially in the media kids watch. A few seconds of a same-sex couple shouldn’t be controversial, they argued. It should be normal.

Snoop / IG / The 53-year-old legendary rapper says that he is “scared to go to the movies now" because of the LGBTQ+ stuff.

But not everyone disagreed with Snoop Dogg. Some high-profile voices, including the hosts of "The Breakfast Club," backed him. DJ Envy said, “I'm with Snoop.” The issue for them wasn’t hate, but timing. They argued that movies shouldn’t force parents into deep talks about sexuality before kids are ready to understand it.

A Fake Apology Adds to the Mess

Things got weirder when an apparent apology popped up online. In a Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post, a comment appeared under Snoop’s name saying, "My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old." It looked like a soft backtrack. But then Snoop Dogg’s team called it out as fake. He didn’t post it. No one knows who did.

This didn’t stop the conversation. Screenwriter Lauren Gunderson, who worked on early versions of "Lightyear," defended the film. She said that even a brief moment of queer love matters because it is real and deserves to be seen. For her, leaving it out would have felt like erasing people’s lives.

Snoop / IG / Chris Evans, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, fired back at critics, calling them “idiots” and saying we need to keep moving forward.

Progress, in his view, means showing the world as it is, not hiding parts of it because some people feel uncomfortable.

But the real story here is bigger than one movie or one scene. Snoop Dogg's reaction tapped into a growing divide in pop culture. Some folks want more visibility for LGBTQ+ people in everything, including children’s entertainment. Others feel like it is too much, too soon, especially when they are still figuring out how to talk about these topics with their kids.

Still, Snoop Dogg isn’t a politician or a preacher. He is a grandfather who stumbled into a tough conversation during a movie. Some people see honesty in that. They relate to the awkwardness, the surprise, the feeling of being caught off guard.

But honesty doesn’t shield you from criticism. When you are a public figure, especially someone like Snoop Dogg with a massive platform, your words carry weight. And this time, his words sparked something deeper than just social media noise. They pushed people to ask real questions about how we talk to kids, how we shape stories, and who gets seen in them.
